Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect during an initial phone consultation?

An initial phone consultation usually lasts between 15-20 minutes. It is an opportunity for you and I to obtain a better idea about whether it will be a good fit to work together. It allows me to gain a better understanding of how I might best be able to help you. It also provides an opportunity for you to give a brief overview of your goals and expectations for therapy and to ask any questions you might have. The phone consultation is a good opportunity to discuss insurance and fees.

What can I expect during the initial intake appointment?

The goal of the initial intake is for me to gain a better understanding of all of the factors that have contributed to you pursuing help at this time and for you to decide if you would like to continue to work together. While it is important for me to obtain a information about your background and history, it is more important that you feel safe and supported during our meeting. First appointments can be anxiety-provoking and deeply emotional. I do my best to ensure all of my clients feel supported, heard, and are given time and space to process and regulate their emotions.

During the intake, we will review a number of forms and discuss various procedures and policies (including confidentiality and HIPPA). After the initial paperwork is completed, I will spend the rest of the session getting to know you! This includes learning more about your history (medical history, family history, work history, legal issues, and any substance abuse issues) and your past and current symptoms. The intake is also a therapeutic process that allows us to continue to explore what you are seeking to accomplish in therapy and what lead you to seek out services. If this is your first time in therapy and you want to know more about what to expect, please review this guide on What to Expect When You Schedule & Attend Your First Session

What if I need to reschedule or cancel my appointment?

I understand there are certain events that may prevent you from being able to attend therapy. I request you notify me within 48 hours in order to not be charged a no-show/late cancellation fee. If we both agree you were unable to attend due to circumstances beyond your control, I will waive the fee.

How do I know if it is a good fit?

In order for therapy to be effective, it is important that you work with a therapist who is the right fit for you. There may be many factors that contribute to whether a therapist is the best fit. For example, do they take your insurance? What is their level of education and training? What is their specialty? Do you feel comfortable with them? While I try to be the “best fit” for my clients, if we work together and you find that this is not the case, I will provide you with referrals for therapists who might be a better fit.
